An Umbrella Insurance Policy, also known as an (excess liability policy), is an extra amount of liability insurance coverage that goes beyond the limits of the policyholder's auto, home or boat insurance.  Adding an umbrella policy gives you a much needed additional liability protection. In the case of an at fault accident, your auto insurance will be the first to pay out. Even if you carry higher coverage limits, it may not be enough for all circumstances. Of course causing a multi car accident or overturning a semi would result in even greater amounts of damage. This is where an umbrella comes in and gives you 1 Million dollars or more of liability insurance on top of your policy.  Umbrella policies start at $1 Million Dollars.  Umbrella policies are available in $1, $2, $3, $4 and $5 million amounts.
